The Olympus E620 may not look much different than any other DSLR camera, but it has a lot to offer, especially in the new field of entry-level DSLRs. It combines decent specs and new features with a compact form and low price tag to make it an attractive option in a camera and something that definitely caught our eye at PMA this year.
One of the most impressive features about the E620 is that it comes with built-in art filters. While art filters are nothing new, they’re usually included in the lens and require a different lens when the photographer is looking for a different look. Having the filters included in the body of the E620 saves time and money from not having to edit the images in PhotoShop or buying other expensive lenses. This is ideal for an entry-level digital camera especially, allowing first-time DSLR users to get comfortable experimenting with the different settings. It’s a new feature that will help them grow into their skills and camera.
There are six filter effects included: Pin Hole, Grainy Film, Light Tone, Pale Light & Color, Soft Focus and Pop Art. The E620 also has three image stabilization modes included in the body and not the lens. It also includes Olympus’ typical way-more-than-enough automatic shooting modes with 11 total. These include anything from night scenes and fireworks to portrait and underwater scene modes.
Olympus has managed to include everything you would need in a camera in one convenient location. It will last for a while, however, the lack of a built-in WiFi browser may make the E620 seem a little old as more and more cameras continue to incorporate that instant wireless access straight into the camera. But, judging from this year’s PMA, that may still be a ways off yet and this camera really is a top-of-the-line entry level DSLR.
A $700 the Olympus E620 is a little pricey for an entry-level DSLR camera, but it definitely saves you money where it counts. Including the art filters and image stabilizers in the body make this camera good investment. Users will save money and still improve their artistic abilities with the features on this camera. It’s well worth the price tag.
With rows upon rows of cameras at PMA, what made the E620 stand out? We really liked the fact that, although it was a low-key product without all the bells, whistles and security like other displays may have had (Samsung) the E620 had an all-around solid value as well as new technology that is sure to be incorporated in more DSLR models. We predict the pioneering attitude of the E620 will make it a popular and trendsetting product.
The Olympus E620 is a good camera at a decent price. With new features like incorporated artistic filters and compact size make it a leader in the entry-level DSLR category and an all-around good investment.
