It’s the epitome of durable and the Olympus Stylus Tough6000 put on a pretty good show at PMA. We like to think this camera is Olympus’ way of showing their view on the economy: tough enough to handle anything, even a recession. From freezeproof demos and waterproof displays, Olympus had everyone at PMA noticing the camera. But will it still be as noticeable in the future? We think so.
Rugged seems to be the new theme in many gadgets. From laptops to cell phones, it seemed only logical that cameras would soon follow suit. While there have been some “tough” cameras out there, the 6000 seems to put them all to shame.
It’s drop proof from up to 5 ft. We actually saw it in action at PMA. The Olympus rep had no problem dropping the camera on the floor time and again then picking it up and snapping a 10 MP photo. The camera is also freeze-proof and so many other “proofs” that you could almost say it’s idiot proof.
Along with the rugged features, the Olympus Tough6000 also includes 3.6x optical zoom and a touch screen interface filling the back of the camera. You can adjust the picture modes by tapping the sides, top or back of the camera, perfect for underwater shots or when you have your gloves on and can’t push small buttons.
The future of tech is more rugged. That said, the Olympus Tough6000 is as rugged as they come and will probably hang around for a while.
At $300 the Tough6000 is a pretty good investment. However, we’re hoping that as the Tough becomes more saturated in the market, the price tag won’t be as resilient as the camera and will come down.
Flat out, the Olympus Tough6000 was the most noticeable camera at PMA 2009. From sales reps dropping it, to a display with several cameras encased in ice and more than a few of the products at the bottom of water tanks, Olympus pretty effectively demonstrated just how tough the Olympus Tough really is. Plus, it comes in four colors, on the whole the camera just sounds awesome.
Tough enough to handle almost anything without a dent, scratch or waterlogged after effects, the Olympus Tough6000 is a rugged camera that can go as far as you do.
