The Sony CyberShot DSC-G3 is a pretty impressive point and shoot camera. Among the first from Sony for 2009, it gives users some different options, and more freedom with its WiFi compatibility allowing you to take a photo and send it wherever it needs to go in the same moment.

Standout Features

  • WiFi compatibility
  • 10 MP resolution
  • Smile Shutter technology

Features:   Excellent

Where to stop? The Sony CyberShot DSC-G3 is, as a point and shoot, so full of features – new and old – that we could probably go on and on listing them. However, we’ll stick with some of the most noteworthy ones.

The biggest feature Sony has incorporated in the G3 is the new WiFi capability. Now you can get to any WiFi hotspot and upload pictures and images to email to family and friends or to dump on your favorite photo sharing sites like Shutterfly, Photobucket, Flick’r and even put your videos on YouTube.

Add in a couple more features like 10 MP resolution, face detection, anti-blink with the Smile Shutter technologies make this camera small but capable.

Future Proof:   Excellent

The future of cameras is wireless. So the G3 is a step ahead of its competition and will be up-to-date for a long time. Plus, with its compact size and touchscreen covering the back of it, the G3 will probably look newer and more hi-tech than some of the cameras we’ll see at next year’s PMA.

Value:   Excellent

While we love the features and the overall look of the G3, the $500 price tag is something we’d like to see go. However, because the WiFi technology is fairly new and hasn’t been incorporated into a lot of point and shoot cameras, the price will probably stay high until more WiFi enabled cameras saturate the market.

Style:   Excellent

Anything from Sony will always look nice, so the DSC-G3 has that in its favor. Plus, it’s pioneering new tech and a new combination of old features in the point and shoot realm, so it’s pretty impressive.

Summary:

With so many features crammed into one camera, the Sony CyberShot DSC-G3 is a good investment for the serious photographer that doesn’t want to lug around a DSLR.
