Another iteration of the Flip Mino pocket-sized camcorder success, the Sony Webbie HD offers some features that make it different from the Mino and different from the other Sony Webbie camcorders. The Webbie HD, with swivel lens brings, in vertical form has a whole new look but with the same features we liked in the original Webbie.
It comes in three attractive colors: silver, orange and purple. So not only does it make you look good on screen, but it looks good itself. We like the vertical Webbie’s swivel lens because it makes it easy to film those difficult to get to angles (i.e. you don’t actually have to lie on the ground to get that looking up effect). The swivel lens also makes it easier to film yourself. The swivel lens is also the power on/off. To turn it on you just have to move the lens around. This could be problematic if you keep it in your pocket or bag. It could be a huge battery drain.
Shoot video both in HD (1080p) and standard (480p) formats with the Webbie and take 5MP stills. We liked that it had individual buttons for picture and video making it easy to switch between the two formats. With a memory card it can hold up to 8.5 hours of video or thousands of photos.
The Flip Mino has shown that pocket-sized camcorders are on the rise. With the trend in electronics getting smaller every year, the vertical Webbie is sure to continue to be timely and relevant. In fact, with the swivel lens, we think the Webbie will have a lot of copy cats as well.
At $150 the Webbie HD is $50 cheaper than the current Webbie HD, so it’s a pretty good deal coming from Sony. It’s the same price as the Mino, which makes them competitive, but Sony will have to start offering more color options or drop the price to make it as attractive as the Mino or even the Kodak Zx1.
We’re kind of partial to the Mino, so when we saw that Sony was coming out with their own version, we got excited. Plus, the bright orange and purple looked nice in Sony’s PMA display. So, just because we think it looks cute and because it’s Sony’s move into the super trendy consumer electronics, we think the vertical Webbie does have a lot of prestige.
The Webbie HD is a cute, palm-sized camcorder that will probably stay around for a while.
